History of Holmes Beach

The barrier island of Anna Maria, for 1,000s of years offered a bountiful ecosystem for Native Americans who were the first inhabitants until it was claimed by Spain in the 1500s, then acquired by the U.S. as part of Florida in 1819.

There are different theories of the naming of Anna Maria Island. Some records indicate that the island was named by the Spanish after Maria, mother of Christ and her mother, Anna. Others state that explorer Ponce De Leon, who is said to have landed on the island and named it in honor of Maria Anna, who was Queen to King Charles II of Spain at the time. And more recently, named by early settler Tampa mayor Madison Post who reportedly named the island after his wife Maria and sister-in-law Anna. It wasn’t until 1894 that the name Anna Maria Key was registered officially with federal records. Learn more at the Anna Maria Island Historical Society

The first known resident’s baby born on the island was Anna Maria Cobbs, whose parents, Sam and Annie Cobb, had homesteaded 160 acres in 1896 in what is now Holmes Beach. Read Anna Maria’s speech on growing up on the island to get a glimpse into life on the island in the early 1900’s. The first island post office was established in 1902 in the home of the Cobbs.

The city was incorporated in 1950 and was named after Jack Holmes, a developer who arrived on the island after World War II and created a 600-acre community.

In 1970 and 1971, two high rise buildings, Martinique Condominiums, were erected in Holmes Beach to become the first and last high rises on the island. The town didn’t like the idea of high rises taking over and passed an ordinance banning any future high rises in Holmes Beach following similar ordinances passed in the two other cities, Bradenton Beach and Anna Maria, on Anna Maria Island.
